How to Make Blanket Pants, Where to Buy the Blanket & How to Style

Sharing is caring!

Blanket pants are pants made from a woven tapestry blanket. If you’ve been seeing blanket pants trending on TikTok and Pinterest, this tutorial will show you exactly how to make blanket pants even if you’re new to sewing.

There are a couple of things you’ll need;

1) A woven tapestry blanket.

2) A pair of jeans or pants which fit you well.

3) A sewing machine.

4) An elastic waist band.

5) A pair of fabric scissors.

While there are countless methods you can use depending on your level of expertise, we’ll be featuring some of the easiest ones we could find.

As mentioned earlier, the first thing you’ll need is a woven tapestry blanket. You can get one from your local thrift store, Amazon, Etsy, Ebay or Urban outfitters. Check out some of our favs below.

The key in making a good pair of blanket pants is paying attention to the size and how bold the print is. The bolder the print on the woven tapestry blanket, the better your blanket pants will look.

How to make blanket pants

Start by laying your blanket down on a flat surface. Take note of the measurements and cut off the fringe like ends on the shorter side of the blanket. These will be attached later.

Take the blanket and fold it on itself 3 times interchangeably. Your end result should have 2 folded sides and a straight piece, a folded piece and another straight piece (please refer to the video for a better visual).

The next part is where you take your favourite pair of pants or jeans, fold them in half and place them on top of the side of the blanket with 2 folded parts.

The pair of pants you pickled are what you’ll use to model the fit of the blanket pants you’re making.

After laying them on top of the blanket, take a pair of fabric scissors and cut the blanket across the template of the pants whose fit you’re modelling.

PS- Normal scissors will make it difficult for you to cut through the fabric, so remember to get a pair of fabric scissors.

Make sure you leave about an inch of seam allowance to make the sewing process easier.

Once you’re done cutting the outline of your pants against the blanket, you should have 2 big continuous pieces.

You’ll then proceed to sow the pant lines together. Take the first side and sew straight starting from the bottom where the fringe like ends are, to your crotch area. Remember to leave the top side open.

Do this for both of the pieces the you cut out.

After sewing both individual sides as instructed, take one of the sown pant lines and turn it inside out. Put it inside the other pant line that’s still on the wrong side.

Align the crotch areas together and sew them individually.

You can now turn both sides inside out. At this point you should ideally have what looks like a pair of pants.

If you want blanket pants which have fringe like ends on the sides, this is the part where you’ll want to attach the sides we cut out when starting.

Take your blanket pants and turn them inside out again. You should do this while the pants are on the wrong side (the inner side).

Cut a straight line across the ends of the pants and place the fringe like ends you cut out in between them. The fringe like ends should be facing inwards. Sew them together and repeat the same process on the other side.

The next part will involve adding the waist band and some elastic.

Fold the top area and sew it around while leaving a bit of space at the centre on the upper side. This space will be used to insert the elastic band.

Turn the pants inside out (on the good side) and measure your waist to ensure the elastic band is the same size.

Take the elastic band and attach it to something that will make it easier to move it around the waist band.

Insert it into the opening you left while sewing the waist band and move it around until you have both sides peaking out of the same opening.

Sew them together and close the opening by sewing it too.

There you have it, a pair of blanket pants. For a better detailed visual, refer to the video below.

Here’s another tutorial that’s also easy to follow.
